The first group of students to take folktales into the community under the Story Squad name in 2011. They visited a retirement community, several local elementary schools, and performed at the annual UNC “Winter Stories” Festival with the UNC Libraries, and the “Stories Under the Stars” Festival with the Morehead Planetarium.
Welcome to Story Squad, a literacy outreach program of the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We take folktales from around the world into the community for grow literacy and sow enchantment because we believe that reading begins with hearing. So many children struggle with learning to read, and a solid exposure to oral storytelling is one of the best ways to prepare children for reading.
